The history of the Avon Law Office of Singer McDowell & Schmutte P.A. can be described as a merging of two types of practices to establish a local law office which could meet all the needs of west-side residents. Each member brings individual expertise in his particular area of law, ensuring that clients will always have superior representation regardless of their legal needs. Avon Law Office was established to fill the need for general legal services both in Avon, a growing community in Hendricks County just west of Indianapolis, and throughout the state of Indiana.

The core of the firm began in 1988 when Michael F. Singer, a long-time Avon resident, moved his practice from Danville to Avon. At that time, although he continued to accept other types of cases as well, Michael chose to focus on criminal law with an emphasis on alcohol and drug offences. His extensive community contacts and success in this field allowed him to quickly build his client base. He became well known throughout the area for his passionate and thorough defense of his clients. Eventually he came to believe that an expansion of his firm to allow more civil practice would allow him to meet other client needs as well.

Sixteen years later, The Avon Law Office of McDowell & Schmutte P.A. was formally established in 2002 when Robert (Bob) McDowell and Nicholas (Nick) Schmutte decided to combine their private practices.
Both Robert (Bob) McDowell and Nicholas (Nick) Schmutte maintained private practices since graduating from law school. During this time, Mr. McDowell represented hundreds of clients going through Divorce or Child Custody Disputes. Mr. Schmutte, represented clients in a variety of civil cases, focusing his skills most recently in the area of Consumer Bankruptcy.

Although their joint private practice was new to the area, Robert (Bob) McDowell and Nicholas (Nick) Schmutte had worked together since 1986 in the Contracts Department of a major Indianapolis employer. Each held progressive positions of responsibility with Allison Gas Turbine Division of General Motors (now Rolls-Royce Corporation), seeing the company through two major ownership changes, first a management buyout and next acquisition by a foreign company, Rolls-Royce plc. Together, Mr. McDowell and Mr. Schmutte offer the most extensive hands-on experience in drafting, negotiating, and administering government contracts available from any private law firm in the Indianapolis area.

In 2003, these two firms decided to cross the parking lot that divided them, and form a single, multi-focus firm. This combination of three experienced attorneys is ideal for any person who desires individual attention and superior representation without having to spend the time and trouble of traveling to meet with an attorney in his downtown Indianapolis office. The smaller corporate client looking for success in navigating the complex requirements of government contracting or subcontracting with prime contractors of the U. S. Government can be helped.
